ATLANTA SUSTAINED BUILDING ORDINANCE TABLED
As proposed, the Atlanta Sustained Building Ordinance would have crippled the commercial real estate industry in Atlanta. The proposal mandated expensive retrofits of building systems, required all new and existing buildings to become compliant with LEED or similar green building standards, created costly and time-consuming bureaucratic hurdles, and contained no incentives to offset the expensive mandates that would have become effective in 2010. If the original proposal had become law, it would have stifled economic growth and driven existing tenants and economic development opportunities out of the city.
